Dr. Patrick Higgins attended medical school at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in Newark, New Jersey. He subsequently completed an internship at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey and then returned to UMDNJ, where he completed his ophthalmology residency at the New Jersey Eye Institute. Dr. Higgins is double fellowship-trained, having completed a one-year medical retina fellowship at New York University in New York City, followed by a second surgical retina fellowship at the Touro Eye Infirmary in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Dr. Higgins has been a practicing vitreous-retinal surgeon specializing in medical and surgical disease in northern New Jersey for over 15 years and was the founder of the Retina Center of New Jersey. He has extensive experience in clinical research and has participated in over sixty clinical trials dating back to 1998. Among those were clinical trials for many of the pharmaceuticals that are currently being used as a standard of care in the retina/ophthalmology field today.
Dr. Higgins was born and raised in Nutley, New Jersey where he resided with his family for 33 years. He now lives in Ridgewood, NJ with his four children and parents. Dr. Higgins is excited to continue to provide his community with outstanding medical care.

In 2020 I was Dx w/ a Retina tare in left eye. I had many floaters and a large blob (blood clot) too. I was frantic! I visit a surgeon who told me it would require a numbing injection into my eye. I said no! He told me I could go blind if not done within 24 hours. I left his office. Miraculously, I saw on TV that same night how Dr. Higgins. a renown had a new Laser Surgery Technique. I called the office and received an appt for the next day. How Blessed is my GOD to bless me with my desire and need being met! (Psalms 37:4). They are very professional and found out why I went blind in my left eye. The 1st Dr I saw on 12/27/19 went thru what happened and tried to fix it with an injection into my eye. It helped a little but today 12/31/19 it got worse. I called and they got me right in. The Dr today said the only option is a cold Laser to burn the bad area away. I knew I had a torn retina one night at 8pm as Dr. Higgins told me it would happen to my other eye, but it was after office hours so I went to HUMC. I told them I had a torn retina but they insisted I had a stroke. After 7 hours they brought me to the eye exam room and took about 15 min to turn on the light on the machine. They were the ER doc and the doc in charge of the ER. They found amazing beautiful colors in my eye (blood) and sent me home saying I'm fine. The next morning Dr. Higgins fixed 5 tears in my retina. He told me I should have called him as he has all neccessary equipment to fix it in his home. You can't get better service than this! I continue to see him once a year for exams. The first time I saw him was the day after Thanksgiving, I called my Optimologist after having flashes and he called Dr Higgins who met me at his closed office on the way to his son's basketball game.
